27 June 2006 Children involved in speed crackdown
A group of school children in Wales are being used to help tackle speeding in their local area.Students in Powys have been trained in using laser speed cameras to measure how fast motorists are going, reports the Powys County Times.
It is part of a scheme to reduce the speed of drivers, in the hope of cutting the number of accidents on the road.
Drivers who are caught travelling above the speed limit are being forced to explain their actions to the school children, something which police in the area believe could serve as a good deterrent.
"I would expect a motorist, who would have to answer to a group of school children, to modify their future behaviour while using the roads," said PC Lyn Heard.
Speeding increases the danger of being involved in an accident and the points on a driver's licence that go with it increase insurance premiums with many car insurance providers.
Road safety campaigners are keen to continue spreading the message that by reducing the speed at which cars travel on the road, the number of accidents will also fall sharply.
"Inappropriate speed on Powys roads is one of the major causes of road traffic collisions," says Sarah Morris, road safety project manager.
"It is hoped that motorists will adhere to and respect the speed limits, which will greatly improve the road safety within the vicinity of our schools," she concluded.
