26 June 2006 Jewellery may not be covered
Expensive jewellery may need extra cover in addition to the contents cover found in many home insurance policies.
The warning comes from website insuresupermarket.com which says that many people are not aware that some of their most prized possessions may not be protected.
Despite having a home insurance policy that may cover a few thousand pounds, many people are not insuring their more expensive items.
A recent survey highlighted the fact that two-thirds of people in the UK were not covered against losing their wedding ring.
"It could be that people are not being savvy enough, they are not aware that they need to list their ring as a separated item on their insurance," said Peter Gerrard, senior researcher at insuresupermarket.com.
"People should be conscious of the fact that whenever you buy an expensive item, a wedding ring for example, you should check your insurance policy. It is not the first thing everybody thinks of, especially when you get married and you have got other things to think about," he added.
Whenever you buy or receive an expensive item, it is worthwhile checking to make sure that your current insurance policy covers it, if not then it may be worth taking out additional protection.
