23 June 2006 House burglaries could be halved
Homeowners are being told that heeding the advice of home insurance providers could reduce burglaries by half.
This is according to police in Avon and Somerset who say that 50 per cent of all burglaries in their area could have been prevented.
Officers say 30 homes have been broken into since the beginning of June and 15 of those were down to windows and doors being left open.
"All too often we hear about occasions where people have been relaxing in their gardens enjoying the summer sun and forgetting to protect their homes against burglars," said Chas Cannon, a crime reduction officer at Avon and Somerset Constabulary.
"It is important that people keep their doors and windows closed when out in the garden, but if they are looking to ventilate their homes they should consider using window restrictors which allow the window to open no more than three inches which prevents intruders climbing in," he added.
Police also offer other tips, such as keeping your property clean and tidy to ensure that it looks lived in.
