22 June 2006 Does your car insurance cover driving abroad?

British holidaymakers who are planning to drive to another country are being warned to ensure they have adequate car insurance cover.

Research by independent finance website MoneyExpert shows that around 6.3 million people are planning to travel abroad this year, but many of them may not have the correct cover.

This could lead to severe consequences for many motorists who may run into difficulties when overseas and find that they have to foot the bill.

"Taking your own car overseas makes sense for millions who want to avoid queuing at airports or driving an unfamiliar hire car when you're already struggling to adapt to driving on the wrong side of the road," said Tim Berry of MoneyExpert.

"However, insurers have strict rules on what you can and cannot do when it comes to taking our cars out of the country," he added.

For those drivers who already have car insurance it is important to double check the policy and ensure that it covers driving in a foreign country before setting off.
