Your No Claims Discounts (NCD)

A no claims discount can substantially reduce the cost of your car insurance. However there are several issues surrounding NCD and NCD proof.

If I have more than one car, can I get an NCD on both?

You can only use NCD on one vehicle at a time. If the regular driver has been claim free, we can offer substantial introductory discounts for an additional car.

How do I prove my NCD to you?

An original car insurance renewal notice is probably the simplest way to prove NCD. We will also accept a policy schedule or a letter from your previous insurer stating who the NCD applies to, when it was earned and the amount of discount earned. We can only accept NCD where the previous insurance policy expired less than 2 years ago.

NCD can only be claimed for the regular driver of the vehicle, which may not be the policyholder.

Will you accept NCD built up abroad?

Subject to the following criteria, we will accept proof of NCD from abroad:

  • the date of expiry of the previous car insurance policy must be shown
  • the name of the policyholder must be shown
  • the amount of NCD must either be shown in years or as a from and to date
  • the letter must be written in English and must come from a car insurance company
  • the letter must confirm the claims and accident history.

As with all proofs of NCD, we must receive your proof of NCD within 21 days. If you are having trouble doing this, please contact the NCD department

Can I use the NCD I built up with my company car?

Yes, we do allow a discount for drivers who have driven a company car claim free. You would need to supply us with a letter from your employer stating the following:

  • how long the Regular Driver was insured with the company
  • full details of accident, claims and loss history
  • confirmation that the Regular Driver had sole use of the vehicle including personal usage.

NCD earned on a company car cannot be transferred between spouses irrespective of whether they are covered under the fleet insurance or not.

In the case that the company car was allocated in a family-run business, the letter must come from the car insurance company or broker, as in this case we are unable to accept a letter from the employer.

For the discount to be applicable, you, the regular driver, must have ceased to have use of the company car.

The following vehicles are not considered acceptable when applying for discount:

  • a taxi
  • an agricultural vehicle, such as a tractor etc.
  • an MoD (Ministry of Defence) Vehicle
  • a hearse
  • any type of van, irrespective of size and weight.

I drive a classic car and currently get no discounts. Will you give me any discounts?

Classic car insurance policies tend to be flat-rated and do not take claims history into account. However if you can supply a letter from the car insurance broker or insurer stating how long the classic car insurance was held and detailing any claims history we will apply a level of NCD based on the length of time the policy was held.

My last insurer put me on a bonus accelerator policy. Will you accept this NCD?

Yes. Some car insurers do offer ten-month ‘Bonus Accelerator' policies, and at yesinsurance.co.uk we will grant a full year's No Claims Discount based on one of these schemes.

I had NCD and was then given a company car. Can both these NCD histories be applied to my new policy?

We do try to ensure that you make the most of your claim-free driving history to find you the best price, and we will therefore link past driving histories. However, NCD earned more than 2 years ago cannot be taken into account.

We will also take into account NCD built up with a company car even if your previous insurer did not. Normal burdens of proof apply (see above).

Motability customers will need to give details of NCD from both Eagle Star and Royal and Sun Alliance where applicable, as currently Royal and Sun Alliance will only give details of NCD earned during the period that they have managed the scheme.

I have NCD but cannot provide proof. What happens next?

If you are unable to provide proof of NCD within 21 days from the start date of the policy, the NCD entitlement will be reduced to zero.

We will send you reminders by post and outline the options available to you. However as some insurers insist on a minimum level of NCD it may be necessary to cancel your car insurance policy and move you to a new insurer. If you have any doubts about proof of NCD, call us and one of our advisors will be able to talk you through your options.

Where there is an outstanding claim or if there is money outstanding on a car insurance policy, the insurer will withhold proof of NCD.

If proof of NCD is provided after we have increased the premium, we will re-instate the NCD and adjust the premium accordingly. We will refund any over-payment you may have made.
